Obituary of Howard Edsel Figgins
Of Mt. Morris, age 81, died Sunday, December 21, 2008, at his residence. The funeral service will take place 2:00 pm, Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at the Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris. Rev. Walter David will officiate with burial to follow in Mt. Morris Cemetery. HowardAaas family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm and again on Tuesday from 9:00 am until the time of service at 2:00 pm. Those desiring may direct memorial contributions to the City of Mt. Morris Police Department. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Howard was born March 17, 1927 in Custer, Michigan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. and Della (Hawks) Figgins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy for two years as a Seaman 2nd Class, serving in World War II in the Southwest Pacific and also in Tokyo Bay when the treaty was signed. He and Doris Ida Petersen were united in marriage on February 3, 1950 in Mt. Morris at the Justice of Peace. He worked for Buick Motor Division for 30 years as a skilled tradesman, was a police officer for 22 years with the City of Mt. Morris, constable for eight years and served on the Mt. Morris City Council as a Councilman for 12 years. In 2002, Howard was inducted into the Mt. Morris Hall of Honor.
Howard leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of over 58 years, Doris; children, Rev. Ron F. and wife Carla Iris of Allen Park, Leslie N. Figgins of Lansing, Gary L. and wife Nellie Figgins of Mt. Morris, Una V. and husband Jan Rockwell of Mt. Morris, James H. and wife Barbara Figgins of Clio, Ellen and husband Kail Mahan of Gladwin, Harold V. and wife Janice Figgins of Vassar; twenty four grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; brother, Robert and wife Betty Figgins of Ludington; sister, Joyce and husband Howard "Pete" Pray of East Tawas; brother-in-law, Donald H. and wife Judy Petersen of West Olive; sister-in-law, Iva Figgins and cousins, Russell H. and wife Mary Ann Anderson of Ludington and Howard Jensen of Sioux Falls, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Ruth Marie Figgins; brothers, Harold and wife Margaret Figgins and Eugene Figgins and sisters, Azora and husband King Zimmer and Una Figgins and his loving dogs, Champ and Barney.
