I remember my dad as a hard working guy. He was a great carpenter, having built his own house from the ground up. He of course had help from his brothers. Tom, Doug and Tim. My dad was a home body, he liked being at home and spending time in his barn working on projects from building cupboards to working on snowmobiles. I always thought he was a “hard man”, never showing emotion in any form but that being said my dad always had dogs that he cared for very much. I learned a lot bout dogs from my dad. I use to pheasant hunt with my dad and my uncles when I was very young. I started out just walking with them and then my dad use to let me carry a BB gun and taught me gun safety as we hunted. He would ask me a million times when we were walking along “where’s your safety” so I would check it very time he said that to make sure it was on “safety” and I would answer him every time with it’s on or no red. In fact i use to get annoyed with him asking me that over and over again but when i got older i found myself doing same with my kids. Yup it was a learning lesson that my dad hammered home and I appreciate more now than I did then. I shot my very first pheasant when I was 14 it was a very proud moment for me and for him I think. Later in life we hunted together often, in fact October 20 was like a holiday. We would make plans just as if it was Christmas. We enjoyed watching our dogs work the grass fields and ditches waiting for a rooster to explode out in front of us. To us it wasn’t so much about shooting a bird as it was enjoying watching our dogs work. I have so many great memories with him in North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa. My dad and my Uncle Tom were definitely hunting buddies never going to the field with each other and our dogs.. After I had kids, my dad changed, he went from this hardcore man never showing any emotion to this guy who was kind, caring and loving to Brooke, Jordyn and Larry. They would love to hang out with him out in his barn no matter what he was doing he always included them in the activity. That’s when I knew that he had always been a caring person he was just teaching me how to be a man. I love you dad and I miss you every single day. I can’t wait to me up with you in that pheasant field again and watch Star and Lady and of course Charlie work them birds.

We want to send our sincere sympathy to the family of Larry Sr.. When we think of a kind person and a person of his word, we think of Larry Sr.
It was about seven or eight years ago that the "Briggs Bunch" started to come to Iowa to pheasant hunt here. Every year they would faithfully pull in EARLY with their mobile dog kennel filled with hunting dogs, guns, food and the desire to "hunt those birds!" It was apparent they loved the outdoors and hunting.
We have shared many special times sitting around the dining room table or camp fire just talking. We've shared recipes of pheasant wrapped in bacon and grilled over the open campfire...ah, something to good to try to describe....thanks Briggs family....and in exchange, I made some breath taking lasagna (Hee!)....but you've got to admit, I did make you homemade Lasgna this last fall....and it honestly was mine! (Good or bad, it was mine!)...then there was Snow On the Mountain....you all looked at me like I was crazy when I put that one on the supper table, but you all survived it and even asked me to make it the next year. Uncle Tom's fish fry was always great and then there has been Larry Jr.s fun loving antics. During all this Larry Sr. quietly sat as head of the clan...He'd get that gleam in his eye and sit back in his chair and just enjoy the moment with a chuckle or smile and sometimes just quietly shook his head in agreement or disagreement. I'm not even sure that Larry Sr. knew he played that role....everyone just assumed he was the head.
Then there was our trip to Michigan this past summer. Larry and Lucy had figured out all the places they wanted us to go.. We learned that Michigan was full of many special people like Larry Sr., hard working, down to earth, good people. It was so much fun to see Larry's wood working shop as his wood working was something else he enjoyed. He
wanted us to meet his neighbors the Blasius and see the antique tractors and the maple syrup house and little house in the woods. He wanted us to see Frankenmuth and all the Christmas decorations, Larry Jr. and Tena's cabin....it was like he just couldn't show us enough. He had his brothers, Tom and Doug, come and see us....how they managed that with working and the schedule he had us on to see everything, we still wonder at it all. We had such a nice time.
This past fall, Larry really worked to be out here in Iowa....it was just shear determination and a son and brother that made it all possible for him to be here physically. He never complained, he just did his best to keep up and hunt! One of the last days, Larry was pretty tired out so Mer went out with the car and Larry Sr. The other guys were coming down the field and Mer and Larry Sr. were at the other end blocking. Larry was leaning against the car and all of a sudden a pheasant flew overhead. He shot straight up and hit the pheasant. we teased him about his overhead shooting...he'd just grin and shake his head.
We have many special memories of Larry Sr....there's a place full of peace and love without pain or worry, fear or doubt......I'd like to think that he and his trusty dog, Lady, are looking for the best places to hunt pheasants in that place..... called heaven.

My sincere condolences to the Briggs family,
The memory that I will always have of Larry was when he lost his favorite hunting dog, bird hunting up in Gratiot county, Larry Jr came to me worried about his Dad because he was just sick about losing his dog and told me how much that dog meant to his Father, well that was enough for me and the search was on. After four days of searcing by ground and an air search by one of our local pilots the Dog was located in the middle of nowhere and returned to me by a passing motorist that had found her out in the woods. The man saw me standing outside my truck placing one of Larrys shirts out where he had parked during his hunt so that the Dog might get a scent, he pulled up to me said, you wouldn't be lookin for a Dog would ya? I said, man am I ever! well I got one I found here in the back of my truck. Well I looked in the back of that truck and staring right at me was Larrys hungry, dirty, Bird Dog,I thought man is somone going to be happy to see you again. I will never forget the look on Larrys face when I handed him that old bird Dog, it was like he found his long lost friend, It spoke many things about the caring man that he was. He was a great Guy and loved his friends and family almost as much as he loved that old Dog! Larry will surely be missed, but never forgotten by anyone that knew him. May peace be with you all during this time.
