Peggy was born in Richland, Virginia, on January 29, 1934, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Newton and Grace (Thompson) Barnette. Educated in Virginia, Peggy graduated from Lebanon High School graduating with the Class of 1951. After graduation, she went on to obtain a degree in nursing and graduated from nursing school in 1952. Peggy worked in sales for Kmart for 20 years until her retirement. On July 17, 1952, Peggy married the love of her life, James Sword. Sadly, he preceded her in death on February 15, 1986. Peggy loved her family with all her heart and enjoyed spending as much time with them as she possibly could. She and her sister were inseparable and would often just get in the car and head out on an adventure to Virginia. They even ended up in Florida once. Peggy lived her life with faith and grace and was a longtime member of Outreach Baptist Church. She was a fun-loving, sweet, kind, southern soul who believed in being quiet, polite, proper, and sometimes even strong-willed. Peggy had an amazing flower garden outside and just as many beautiful flowers inside. Christmas was Peggy’s favorite holiday. She had five or six decorated trees as well as hundreds of decorations in her home. Quilting was her favorite pastime. She made quilts for her whole family, even the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Peggy was often found sitting on the floor playing with several children throughout the day. She loved them all dearly. Peggy was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will be dearly missed.
Peggy's family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Serenity Assisted Living for the love and care they gave to their mother. She loved them like they were her family and they loved her too.
They would also like to express a special thank you to the staff from The Care Team Hospice for taking such wonderful care of our mother and our family.
