Obituary of Richard Edward Hawks, Jr.

Age 80, of Genesee passed away Friday, September 8, 2023, at Hospice House of Shiawassee County. In accordance with Richard’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Richard was born in Flint on March 31, 1943, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard and Margaret (Almasy) Hawks. Educated locally, he attended Kearsley High School, graduating with the Class of 1961. Richard was a member of the National Guard and during the riots in the 60's, Richard worked in Detroit. On March 18, 1967, Richard married the love of his life, Linda Phillips, at the Asberry Methodist Church in Flint. Richard began his career working for General Motors, as a Millwright. A hard-working, family man, Richard worked many seven-day-a-week workweeks, ensuring he was able to provide for his family. A dedicated employee, Richard retired from GM in 2000. A long-time member of the Genesee United Methodist Church, Richard also served as the President of DeMolay International in the 60's. Richard enjoyed traveling, especially throughout Michigan. He enjoyed the beauty of Michigan, from his favorite hotel in Mackinaw City to many beautiful places in the Upper Peninsula, and all Michigan had to offer. Richard was an avid duck hunter for most of his life. He also had a passion for woodworking and making furniture, especially the patio chairs. An avid sports fan, Richard was a huge fan of the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and University of Michigan football, of which he loved going to watch the games as much as possible. In his free time, he enjoyed watching TV, especially crime dramas. He loved his family and will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish Richard's memory are his wife of 56 years, Linda Hawks; sons: Mark Hawks and girlfriend, Taryn Perry, and Michael Hawks; and several nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.                                                      

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Terri Timock.
