Obituary of Lanny Lee Tinnin, Sr.
Age 73, of Burton, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2023, at his home. The funeral service will take place at 1:00 pm, Thursday, July 6, 2023, at Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services in Mt. Morris; with burial to follow at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. Pastor Sarah LaRose-Nettell officiating. Lanny's family will gather at the funeral home to receive friends on Thursday from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm. Lanny was born in Flint, on July 18, 1949, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Mabin A. and Birdie G. (McBride) Tinnin. Educated locally, Lanny attended high school until enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. On December 7, 1967, shortly after his 18th birthday, Lanny would heed his call of duty to serve his country. Lanny was stationed in Vietnam. As a young brave Corporal Lanny Tinnin, would become a Squadron Leader based on his leadership skills and bravery. As a Squadron Leader, Corporal Tinnin would become a two-time Purple Heart Recipient. Through his bravery and leadership, he was able to lead his Squadron to safety countless times. Corporal Tinnin also earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. He received his honorable discharge on May 21, 1970, while stationed in Kansas City, Missouri. Upon returning to civilian life, Lanny would begin working production for General Motors, Chevy in the Hole Plant, until 1991; from there he would become a custodian for Bishop Airport in Flint until his retirement in 2010. He met, fell in love with, and married Kay Hovis on April 13, 2002. In his free time, Lanny enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was the true definition of an outdoorsman, who loved to take his family camping, and fishing.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Daphane (Matthew) Lewis, Gretchen (Tim) Olds, Lanny (Tabitha) Tinnin, Mindy (Paul) Hund and, Suzanne Barrett-Grissom ; brother, Dale (Irene) Tinnin; step-children: Dawn (Tony) Cuevas, Jack Boyd, Shannon Hovis, Jason (Pam) Boyd, Jennifer Boyd, and Christina (Edward) Swain; several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Dee Tinnin, and Linda Wilson; and many other family members and friends.
Lanny was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kay; brothers Danny, and Steve; and his sister, Donna.
