We will remember Jan's smile and his love for his beautiful wife Una. We will miss you. The lake house will never be the same without you here. I know you'll be here in spirit though and it comforts me to know God has another angel in heaven. Keeping you and your family in our prayers. Friends Forever, The Blackmore's...

I believe Jan Rockwell never met a stranger. When you met Jan you always came away with something worthwhile. If the meeting was in the hardware it might have been a washer, a bolt or an odd length of PVC pipe. "No charge. It's on the house." Jan was the Swiss Army Knife of friends. You are 30 miles down a wilderness road in Alaska with one flat tire, one spare tire and another tire going flat. If you have Jan, a roll of Duck Tape and a screw driver, you will come out okay. If you needed a smile, Jan had an endless supply of one liners. "Whatever floats your boat. Lord Luv a Duck. etc. etc." If you needed advice (or not) Jan was ready with words of wisdom. "Hey want a tip? Don't squat with your spurs on." If you really needed advice, Jan would listen without judgement, and help you find the right course to take. On our first trip to Tawas to visit Jan and Una, Jan took me to a local restaurant for breakfast. Jan introduced me to the ex-mayor, two local contractors, two Vets, three waitresses, the breakfast cook and the restaurant owner. Each person was introduced by first name and short commentary. "This is my favorite waitress. This is the hardest working cook in town." No matter how busy and harried the person, by the end of Jan's short introduction they were smiling. Before leaving the owner asked Jan if he would look at the screen door in the back of the kitchen and see if it could be fixed. Well, it was clear the door had been "fixed" several times. I volunteered an opinion that there wasn't much door to fix and it should be replaced with a new door. Jan just said, "If they replace it with a new door, I won't be able to come down here and fix it." Some screws, some wood, an hour of labor and the door was fixed, again. "No charge. It's on the house. Or, it's on the restaurant! Get it?" The restaurant owner not only got her door fixed but the assurance that this guy cared enough to go the extra mile. I got to spend an extra hour with my old friend. You may have gotten a couple of free washers or a toilet float and the feeling that "...this guy is special and he made me feel special". Yep, you met Jan Rockwell and that was worthwhile.

All Jan memories are most fond. Every time spent with Jan for me was either an education or an exercise in laughter. He was a natural teacher of broad topics of knowledge sometimes just to pull your leg (for laughter) often sincere and useful.
Jan and Una were always welcoming to Ragen and I visiting them in their wonderful Tawas home on the water. Their kindness and generous nature with Jan’s “whatever makes you happy” attitude made visits a lot of fun.
Growing up as a kid I called Jan Uncle until about age 20 when he reminded me, “you know we’re cousins, calling me uncle makes me feel old.” Really he was more of friend and that to everyone.

I had the honor of knowing and caring for Jan at Cranberry Park. He was always such a joy to be around. That was my guy right there! All he talked about was his hardware store. I knew he took great pride in everything he did. I will always remember the bond we shared and the many stories he told me. My condolences to his wife, who was such a pleasure getting to know. -Tasha

I remember I was putting in a water heater. Jan went to the hardware store after hours to get parts and then he helped me install the water heater. A very giving man. Our condolence to your family. Rest in peace Jan.

I remember going to the Hardware/Sporting Goods Store to buy athletic equipment for my daughter when she was in school. We were talking on Father's Day and she mentioned that her first pair of basketball shoes were leather Converse All-Stars that we purchased at Rockwell's. Todd I will be praying for you and your family during this difficult time.

I once said, "I wouldn't have been a bit surprised if I walked into the hardware and Jan didn't have a shirt on." He gave away another one. Jan would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed one. Lol. Jan was an Ambassador for his family and his community. I never heard him say an evil word about anyone. He was an important person to many, particularly my cousin. I imagine he will find Clark leaning on cloud. My heart is heavy and my eyes are wet.

I did not realize Jan was at cranberry park. We live across the street. Saddened to hear when an old friend passes away. Ron and Jan were old old friends. Way before the hardware store. Many memories. My condolences to you Una.
