Obituary of Harold Byron Smith
Age 82, of Mt. Morris, passed away Friday, March 24, 2023, at home with his family by his side. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 am, Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. Rev. Fr. Roy Horning to officiate, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery. Harold’s family will be present to receive friends from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, March 27, 2023, at Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services. At 6:00 pm, on Monday evening, family, friends, and parish will gather to pray the Rosary followed by a Knights of Columbus Service and 4th Degree Chalice Ceremony. On Tuesday morning, Harold will be taken to church to lie in state from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. Harold was born in Flint, Michigan, on August 11, 1940, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George and Alberta (Hart) Smith. Educated locally, he attended Flint Central High School, graduating with the class of 1958. Harold met Jean Dolan, and the two were united in marriage on August 22, 1964, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. Harold worked as a Manager for Hamady Bros. grocery store for 35 years, until his retirement in 1991. From there, he would begin working for Manheim Michigan Auto Auction as a driver for many years. He also worked as a driver at Miles T. Martin Funeral Home for 17 years before retiring in 2017. During his career with the funeral home, Harold earned the Driver of the Year Award in 2011 and 2013. Harold was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus #4285 in Mt. Morris and a long-time member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. Harold enjoyed going to Las Vegas and playing cards, especially Euchre and Poker. He enjoyed camping, the University of Michigan games, and spending time with his family and friends, as well as going to his children's and grandchildren's activities. Harold had a great sense of humor and loved sharing a good joke to make others laugh. One of his favorite pastimes was listening to music, especially Neil Diamond and Garth Brooks But above all else, he loved to dance with his beloved wife. He was a wonderful dancer. He will be greatly missed.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Jean; three children: Linda and husband, Mark Leigh, Brian and wife, Elena Smith, and Chrissy DeVeaux; six grandchildren: Courtney and husband, Brad Moore, Mikayla Smith, Sean Leigh, Nicholas Leigh, Patrick and wife, Erin Smith, and Kelly Leigh; great-grandchildren: Nolan, Emerson, Finnigan; sister-in-law, Lori Ann Dolan; a niece and several relatives and friends.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Robert Smith, Karen and husband, Bill Sweet; sister-in-law, Sr. M Madeleine Dolan; brother-in-law, Dennis Dolan; nephew, Robert Smith, Jr.
