Dorothy “Dottie” was born in Essexville, Michigan, on May 14, 1934, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur and Bernice (Meiselbach) Erno. Educated locally, Dottie attended Bay City Central High School and graduated with the Class of 1953. She met and married the love of her life, Joseph Ross, on September 25, 1965. Their union would be blessed with four wonderful children. Sadly, he preceded her in death on December 12, 2010. Dottie worked as a security officer and later as the supervisor for the Loss Prevention Department for Sears Roebuck and Company in the Genesee Valley Mall for 21 years until her retirement in 1996. She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Flint and a member of the auxiliary. Dottie was an avid musician in her younger years, playing in various dance bands throughout mid-Michigan, as well as a lifetime member of The American Federation of Musicians since she was 16 years old. She also owned and operated Dottie’s Accordion Studio in Essexville in the ‘60s. Dottie taught her children how to play several instruments, and music is still a big part of their lives today. Dottie enjoyed spending time with her family. She was an amazing cook and always took pride in making breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Her specialty was homemade pizza topped with noodles, which was just fantastic. In her free time, Dottie enjoyed making leather purses, and she took a flower arrangement class as well so she could make her garden the most beautiful year after year. She was a wonderful mother who liked to have fun and always kept things light in her home by playing tricks on her children. That didn’t mean she wasn’t strict and firm, but she loved with a passion and would do anything for them. Dottie was all about her family and loved just listening to her grandchildren play and laugh. She also took great pride in her beloved dachshunds. She will be greatly missed.
Left to cherish Dottie's memory are her children: William and wife, Kathleen Van Ooteghem, Connie Mitchell, Robert and wife, Shelley Van Ooteghem; step-daughter, Carol and husband, Ronald Jankins; grandchildren: Jeff, Sean, Tonya and husband, Jeff, Renee, Justin and wife, Samantha, Kevin, Jeremy, Joseph, Keith, Hannah, Amanda, Kaitlyn; great-grandchildren: Logan, Lydia, Eliza, Kalessi, Sylar, Xayden, Xander, Adrian, Elijah, Brooklyn.
