My papa Wayne had the biggest heart and gentlest spirit. I have so much respect for him. He took care of Gramma homer and after we lost her he was there to love me. I can't believe I can't call him. I will miss the phone calls and fish pictures and just the comfort of having my papa. He was the best grandpa a granddaughter could want.

Dear Family,
Please accept my condolences on the loss of Wayne. He was a true, true friend and his passing leaves me with a heavy heart. I first met Wayne in confirmation class at Trinity United Methodist Church in Chesaning. We soon grew to be the best of friends and kept that friendship going until this day. He certainly had a heart of gold. Even after I left Chesaning, Wayne would stop by my parent’s house to visit and to make sure they were doing ok. I remember many long phone conversations with Wayne where he would describe in amazing detail his latest hunting or fishing adventure. Wayne certainly loved life and I will miss those phone calls the most. I know that one of the happiest days in his life was the day he married Bonnie. How he took care of her in her last days is a tribute to his kind and gentle nature. I will leave you with a couple of funny stories that brighten up my day whenever I think about them and I hope they might bring a little sunshine to your day as well.
When we were young, one of our favorite things to do was to ride our bikes down to the Shiawassee River to go fishing. One particular day Wayne, being the better fisherman, caught several fish, mostly pretty good sized carp. Those days, Wayne kept every fish he caught. Those he wouldn’t eat went into the garden as fertilizer. So there we were, miles from home, on our bikes, with all these fish. So Wayne decided that I should carry the fishing poles and tackle boxes on my bike and that he was going to tie the fish on his bike. There were fish hanging from everywhere on his bike, but mostly from the handlebars. It didn’t take long to figure out that he needed to balance the weight of the fish on the left side of the bike with the fish on the right side because he soon tumbled off into the ditch and fish flew everywhere. At that point Wayne was determined to get those fish home so he decided to tie one fish to each handlebar and dragged the rest of the fish behind his bike. We couldn’t ride very fast dragging those fish, but we made it home.
Another one of my favorite Wayne stories involved a motorcycle. I was going over to Wayne’s parent’s house on M-57 one evening, when I saw a motorcycle parked on the shoulder of the road in front of the house. I asked Wayne what was up with the motorcycle and he said a guy he knew left it there. I don’t remember exactly why this person left the motorcycle, but there is was nevertheless, with the keys in the ignition! I had just recently got my driver’s license and didn’t know much about motorcycles, but Wayne said he knew how to drive one. He spent the next 10 minutes telling me how to shift the gears and use the clutch and brake. At that point I “dared” Wayne to start it up and take it for a ride. Wayne couldn’t turn down a “dare” so he started up the bike, dropped it into gear, let go of the clutch and immediately shot across the front yard and crashed into their evergreen bushes. Miraculously, there was no damage to Wayne or the motorcycle. Needless to say, we parked the bike right back where we found it and wiped it clean in case we left any fingerprints.
We had many other great adventures growing up and I have many fond memories of Wayne. Again, I am truly sorry for your loss. He will not be forgotten.
Best regards,
Mike Gregory
