John, as your journey to Heaven is complete, we would just like you to know that our friendship, our Bible studies together, the opportunity to know you as a great man of faith, a loving husband and father has inspired us. It is said that one life can make a positive difference in the world, and your life on Earth has been a beacon of light for those who have known you. Your sense of humor, patient strength, and kind heart served as a “Hole in One” to use a golf term for all of us who are blessed to have known you.
In Jesus Christ,

Ray Nutter and Margaryta Yermolayeva- I am John’s Brother In Law. My respect for this man is immense. We had many a hard fought battle on the golf course during our annual match. He beat me more often than not, so I savor every victory. It was always fun to be around John. Margaret and I have been praying for him these last 3 years. Now he is with God. We will always remember him and his calm, reassuring demeanor. Rest In Peace, John.

I only knew John from his time at Notre Dame, which was far too short and dominated by his health challenges. I have never met someone with so much courage and strength. He was open from the beginning about his diagnosis, and despite the awful outlook, expressed how urgently he was going to fight. I'm sure he must have had bad days but I never saw them. I don't know how he did it. I'll always remember the grace with which he and Mary carried this awful burden. They are true models. I wish we could have done more to help. May God bless John! May God bless Mary and John's family!

I have known John since his childhood. He and my son Daniel were good friends and had many crazy adventures together. Driving Dan’s old truck through snowstorms just for fun. Their fireplace wood adventures and Yogy Bear fire department. John was the kind of friend every mother wants her child to have. Great kid, great adult! He will be so missed.

I had the great pleasure of knowing John for the past 17 years. We first met when we were both members at Ann Arbor Country Club and had a regular group of golf buddies we played with at least two times a week for several years. It was impossible to meet John and not be impressed with his passion for the game and his obsessively technical attention to his swing, particularly his grip. In getting to know him, it was clear John had three primary passions in his life…his family and friends, his work and career, and golf.
We had so many fun times at AACC and our group has continued to stay close with an annual golf trip to Florida every Super Bowl weekend. Not surprisingly, John was the orchestrator and leader of this trip that we named the Gohsman Cup. I have many great memories of our times at AACC and trips to Orlando but there are two memories that stand out that I would like to share.
The first is of a round of golf I played with John at AACC. It was just the two of us playing and I must say he had the best ball striking round that day of anyone I ever played with. He shot 73, which wasn’t that remarkable for John. Rather, it was the fact that he hit 17/18 greens (little greens at AACC) and had at least 12 birdie putts inside of 15 feet. He never made a one them. He could easily have easily shot 67. It was a privilege to witness his play that day.
The other, is of an early evening round we played after having already played 18 and having a few too many libations before heading out for a second 18. We played as a six-some. This was not one of John’s better days as he was shanking just about every wedge shot and was frustrated as could be. On the second hole, John stripes his drive and hits a perfect long iron to about 75 yards from the green. Time for another wedge shot. You could see “shank” written all over John’s face. Our friend, Joe Himle is a mental health expert who specializes in using exposure therapy with clients with performance anxiety. In his present inebriated state, Joe decides he was going to fix John. Joe lays down on the ground with his head about 6 inches from John’s ball and instructs John to swing away. All present thought Joe was crazy, drunk or both. We had no doubt John was going to “shank” his shot right into Joe’s temple. Without hesitation, John steps up to the ball, adjusts his grip and swings away. A perfect hit and the ball lands softly on the green a few feet from the pin. Himle jumps up, arms in the air and runs around with shouts of victory, high fiving everyone in sight. John just smiles that little wry smile and gets back in the cart….nerves of steel. It was a moment none of us will ever forget.
We will all miss our friend. However, I am sure John has already been to the range, and has a regular tee time on heaven’s golf course…and of course is still fiddling with his grip. The John Gohsman Cup will live on and he will be with us always.

I was deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. I worked with John on the MPathways Project at U-M. He was instrumental in helping me reach some of my professional goals, which led me to my current position as a Business Analyst.
As many have stated, he was a natural born leader and a very kind person. His leadership and compassion for people always shined through in any conversation.
To Mary, Aaron, Evan, and all of John's family, you are in my prayers and thoughts. I pray you experience God's peace in this difficult time, and you find comfort in the words of family and friends.

I am so saddened to hear this news. John was the person who hired me at the University of Michigan 20 years ago. I remember sitting in the conference room in the basement of ASB very nervous for my interview as a very young professional. John's warm smile instantly made me feel comfortable. To Mary and his entire family, I hope you feel surrounded by love during this very difficult time and that the stories you hear and memories you made with John remain in your hearts forever.

In 2015 I met John where else, on a golf course. Quickly found we had a lot in common from raising sons, enjoying a good beer, attending the same church and a love of Meeeechigan. Watching Michigan’s big football games together with Mary and Jennifer through the years was something we enjoyed in spite of the game outcomes. We were always thankful when basketball season started. We went to the Final Four in 2018, where we just relaxed, enjoyed some basketball and had a great time. And on Easter morning, we worshipped together at a very special, historic church in the heart of San Antonio. His great smile never left his face the whole trip.
But I digress. Let’s get back to golf. It was clear from the start that John’s passion for the game knew few equals. He could hammer his driver, stick his iron shots on the green and blade his wedges with the best of us! ;) We played golf on a course that had a “third” way house. It was perfect. We would bet a beer every six holes (did I mention John enjoyed beer?). We applauded each other’s good shots and could laugh at our not-so-good shots. It was a hoot!
To his friends in South Bend and Notre Dame (grr…), know how loved and appreciated you were and are by both John and Mary. Your friendship and support are blessings they mentioned often. …But know Auggie wears a Meeeechigan jersey!

John was an amazing person and the true definition of a pure heart. I will always remember the World Wide Technology golf tournament with John, Mike Isaacs, and Troy Igney from Washington University. By some stroke of luck we got 8 birdie putts and won. We had a blast that day and were like a bunch of kids in a candy store as we used our winner's gift certificates at the St. Alban's pro shop.
John was such a wonderful soul; a committed leader and special person gone way too soon. Wishing the Gohsman family peace during this incredibly difficult time.

John and I first met in June 1983, when we were hired as programmers at the University of Michigan. (Coincidentally, my wife Jeanne recruited us both and Mary, too). One of his qualities that immediately struck me was that he was a natural born leader. He could paint a vision of a brighter future and get others excited about it, as he was so excited too!
A fond memory and metaphor for this was John's fascination of how to grip the golf club. You would talk to him on the phone or text or see him on the golf course. You would ask him how he was playing and he'd say "Horrible! I can't hit the ball anymore and I shot 97, was shanking it, etc." Then, you'd hear from him the next day and he'd say "I went to the range after that and adjusted my left hand 3/8th's of an inch to the right. Oh my goodness! I was hitting every shot a perfect draw and shot 78!" He was so excited about the new version of his game, it was infectious. You would think "Geez, I think he's on to something, I better try it too!"
This same infectious optimism and vision is what made John a world-class leader in his field. He would describe a problem in the organization and then paint us all a vision of how it could be better.
During the late 1990's, John was instrumental in bringing a software product named Peoplesoft to UM. It was a huge investment by the university and John was central to it happening. If you ever drove by the Administrative Services Building near the Big House during that time, it was packed full of UM employees and consultants, all striving towards that vision. I sometimes thought the building might levitate and explode from all of the energy and excitement in those walls.
John had a strong and steady relationship with Jesus. For most of my life, I didn't, but John never preached or lectured to me. I think he one time said "You should check it out". It was like he was patiently waiting for me. Three years later when I joined him as a Christian, he said "Nice job", which is something I will always remember from him.
I take solace now and going forward, imagining John in heaven, shiny and new and beautifully restored, with his dad John, with our Father, patiently waiting for each of us.
