Bill was my Gluten Free buddy. He and I would stand together in back of the communion line. We were waiting till the very last in hopes to get a drop from the chalice, which usually Father G. Would inevitably forget and drink it all. Then we would try to share between us the half drop which happened to be left in the bottom. We grinned and winked at each other knowing we shared a very rare moment together with Jesus. (It happened more than once) We would stand in unison beforehand hoping Fr G would remember to leave us more than half a drop. Once I made Bill his own tray of GF brownies for the potluck after mass. He was excited! But by the time we got back to it, it was all gone.( apparently kids love brownies and can’t read) . I asked Bill if he wanted me to scrape the pan? He eagerly looked at me with a sparkle in his eyes, “sure”! So I gave him his brownies (crumbs) in a pile on a paper plate. He was delighted!!! I will miss that wonderful man. Bill and Mary Anne moved in across the street a couple of years ago and I had the pleasure of sharing some conversations with them both as they tediously worked on their front yard, finding out that Bill was a former Chrysler employee, and myself having nearly 30 years there my self.
