He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. James was an animal lover and loved to camp up north, St. Helen area being one of his favorites, where he would ride dirt bikes through all the trails and up the ski hill with his children and friends. He was an active member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Clio until the time of his passing. In his free time, James enjoyed being outdoors, playing pool (in his younger days), and canoeing.

James leaves to cherish his memory, one son: Tony and wife, Nancy Jay; one daughter: Lisa and husband, Kurt Fuchs; seven grandchildren: Brianna, Alexis, Ashley, Emilee, Zachary, Hannah, Brittney; two great-grandchildren: Easton, Cami; siblings: Diane and husband, Hilliard Shackford, Kathy and husband, Lee Ferris, Dorothy Broadworth, Cindy Goff, Holly Bostic, Eugene Ewald, Ira Ewald; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
