Carrol “Red” was born in Houghton Lake on July 9, 1931, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Wendel. Raised and educated in the Houghton Lake area, at the age of 17, Red jumped out the school’s bathroom window to run across the street and enlist in the United States Navy. After proudly serving his country for 4 years on the USS MMidway, Red was honorably discharged on May 31, 1953. Upon returning to civilian life, Red began his career at AC Spark Plug, becoming General Foreman and retired after 36 years of service. Red met a young woman, the love of his life, Madeline Massoglia. The two were united in marriage and started their life together, sadly, she preceded him in death in 1982. Red loved the outdoors, he enjoyed camping with his family. His favorite place was in Calumet. He also enjoyed hunting, golfing, and bowling. Red loved watching his children play softball and joined a league himself. His passion was his farm in Hale, where he tended to sheep, ducks, chickens, and llamas. Most of all, Red was a loving, wonderful husband and father.

Left to cherish his memory are his son: Ken and wife, Donna Wendel; grandchildren: Tony and wife, Allison; Autumn, Rachelle, and Katie; great-granddaughter: Faith; stepdaughter: Brenda Callahan and, sister: Shirley Wendel.

Red was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Madeline; son: James "Jim" Wendel siblings: Mary Ann and Arnold.
