Maria was born in Salzburg, Austria, on May 21, 1923, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franz and Josephine (Klaus) Mahnig. She was raised in Austria and graduated in 1939. After graduation, she worked for a medical supply company that supplied the military during World War II. She met a handsome young American solider, Nick Schiefer while working at the medical supply company, who escorted her home during the curfew in wartime. They began dating, fell in love, and were united in marriage on April 7, 1946, in Austria. The couple would continue to live in Austria before moving to Germany and finally settling in the United States. As a busy wife, mom, and homemaker, Maria was devoted to her family. She later worked as a retail clerk, at some small shops, before going to work at K-mart in Beecher, retiring with 20 years of service. Maria was devoted to her Lord and a longtime member of St Mary Catholic Church of Mt Morris, and a longtime member of Emmanuel Prayer Group at church. In her free time, Maria enjoyed traveling, socializing with friends, and spending time with family.
Maria leaves to cherish her memory daughter: Monika Haywood; grandson: Robert and wife, Stacy Hastings; granddaughter: Kristina and husband, Ed Shulman; great-grandchildren: Zachary and Shelby Hastings, Maxwell and Levi Shulman; brother: Ferdinand and wife, Maria Mahnig; several nieces and nephews.
