Obituary of Ned Edward Gosselin

Age 90, of Mt. Morris, died Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at McLaren Flint. In accordance with Ned’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Expressions of sympathy and memorial contributions to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan may be placed on Ned’s tribute page at martinfuneralhome.com.
Ned was born in Asheville, NC, on October 14, 1930, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Jessie (Rhodes) Gosselin. Ned was raised and educated locally. Heeding the call to serve his country, Ned joined the Army in 1946 at 16 years of age. He was sent to Hispaniola by transport ship but never got off that ship due to political reasons and then was stationed in Japan. Ned was also stationed in Taiwan and Okinawa and traveled as an armed guard to a port in Southern China to pick up mostly Americans from the Communist Chinese as an exchange. In late June of 1950, he was rushed to Busan, Korea as part of Task Force Smith to fight the North Korean invasion of the South, landing behind enemy lines hours before the Battle of Pyongyang and later advanced to Yalu River. He fought bravely and fiercely against Chinese troops, at which time he was surrounded, wounded, and exhausted but made his way back to United Nations lines. In 1951 he was sent back to the United States as a company Commander. Shortly after that time, with his enlistment being completed, he was honorably discharged from the United States Army. After his honorable discharge, Ned returned to North Carolina, before moving to Michigan for work. He began working in construction, before going to work for General Motors. He then would continue his education at GMI, earning his degree as a skilled trades tool and dye maker. Ned worked at Chevy in the Hole for 30 years, until his retirement. While on a job site, Ned would see a beautiful young woman named Winifred “Martha” Gunther. The two dated, fell in love and were united in marriage on January 1, 1953. Ned was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Mt. Morris. In his free time, Ned enjoyed gardening, traveling throughout the United States, going to the beach, and taking his family on vacation every summer, but most important was his family. Ned was a true gentleman, and a kind and gentle man, who dearly loved his family.
Ned leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 68 years, Martha; three daughters: Wendy Hammond, Cindy and husband, Teddy Campbell, and Mary and husband, Patrick Kidd; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister: Jackie and husband, Frank Camby; and a host of extended family members.
Ned was preceded in death by his parents; son, Frank; brother, Alvin Holmes; sister, Fran Capps.
