Obituary of Gerardine Marie Callahan
Age 97, of Mt. Morris, died Sunday, November 29, 2020, at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:00 pm, Saturday, December 5, 2020, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. Rev. Roy Horning will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family will be present to receive friends from 11:00 am until the time of service on Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt Morris. Gerry was born in Flint, Michigan, on January 26, 1923, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William and Bridget (Ward) Settlemire. Educated locally, Gerry attending St. Michael Catholic School graduating with the Class of 1941. While in high school, she attended a dance at Sacred Heart Catholic School, meeting her future husband, Bill Callahan. The two dated fell in love and were united in marriage on August 9, 1941, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Flint. Gerri was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Morris, volunteering for the Altar Society and singing in the choir. Gerry was a devoted wife, mom, and grandma, while also working for A.C. Spark Plug during World War II, making her a Rosie the Riveter. In 1965, Gerry went to work at St. Joseph Hospital in Flint, working in the central supply department sterilizing medical equipment for 30 years, retiring in 1994. Family was very important to Gerry, and she loved attending her grandchildren's events and traveling with her husband throughout the U.S. Gerry was a U of M fan and liked to go Up North to her cabin at East Tawas and Sand Lake. In her free time, Gerry enjoyed going to the casino, bowling, golfing, playing bingo, fishing, sitting around campfires, and playing cards.
Gerry leaves to cherish her memory son: Michael and wife, Maria Callahan; three daughters: Kathleen Callahan and fiance, David Marcrum, Susan Vara, Mariann and husband, Jeff Sanders; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.
Gerry was preceded in death by husband of 62 years: Bill Callahan; three sons: Gerald Callahan, Robert Callahan, Gregg Callahan; two daughters: Colleen Glover, Sherry Girard; parents: William and Bridget (Ward) Settlemire.
