Dean was born in Detroit, on March 9, 1931, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Nora (Lynch) Hayward. Growing up in Mikado, MI, during the Great Depression, the family relocated to Flint in 1946, when Dean's father went to work for Chevrolet. Dean was educated locally, graduating from Flint Northern High School with the Class of 1950. Heeding the call to serve his country, Dean enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1954. Upon returning stateside, Dean would go on a blind date with Margaret McMahon. The couple dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage three months later, on April 14, 1956, in Flint. Dean began his career at Buick Motor Division in 1959, working in production. While working at Buick, he started attending classes at GMI, graduating with an Industrial Management Degree in 1957. In 1968, Dean earned a promotion with Buick and became a supervisor. After 37 and a half years of service, Dean retired in 1986. An active member of the Church of the Holy Family, Dean was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #6742, and the American Legion Oakley Trainer Post #64. In his free time, Dean enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, hunting, and working on small engines.

Dean leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 64 1/2 years; Margaret; two daughters: Robin and husband, Case Lemstra, Laurie Hayward; son: Dean Jr. and wife, Jody Hayward; three grandchildren: Ashley and husband, Brian Veceillo, Andrew Hayward, and Morgan Hayward; and several nieces and nephews.
