COVID-19 UPDATE: With the recent guidelines limiting the number of people to less than 10 at any gathering, we are asking that you consider other ways to help support family and friends during this difficult time as an alternative to attending a visitation or funeral.

Age 94, of Frankenmuth, formerly of Vassar, died Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at the Hospice House of Shiawassee County. A private burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Tuscola County Humane Society. Expressions of sympathy may be placed on Mary’s tribute page at martinfuneralhome.com.

Mary was born in New Baltimore, Ohio, on September 4, 1926, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hal and Elizabeth (Hrehor) Buck. Raised and educated in Caro, Mary graduated from Caro High School with the Class of 1944. Later, Mary attended cosmetology school, becoming a beautician; and then continuing her education with college classes. She met, dated, fell in love with, and married Mr. Hazen Johnson on January 16, 1945. Mary owned and operated The MaryEtta Beauty Shop in Vassar and Reese for many years. She later worked as a secretary for the Saginaw News and Arthur Hill High School; and later in life, Mary worked as a hostess for the Montague Inn and Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth, until her retirement. Mary was known for her pecan pies and beautiful penmanship, which was more of an art form and truly a talent. She loved to decorate her house and host Thanksgiving dinner. In her free time, Mary enjoyed cooking, baking, and sewing.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory son, Tom and wife, Barb Johnson; daughter, Betty Jane and husband, Donald Baker; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband,  Hazen Johnson; daughter, Nancy Hoerlien; father, Hal Buck; mother, Elizabeth (Hrehor) Buck; and sister, Betty Jane Adams.
