Obituary of Mary Ann VanAlst
Age 85, of Mt. Morris, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2020, at home with her family by her side. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. Fr. Denis Spitzley to officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. On Wednesday morning, Mary will be taken to the church to lie in state from 10:30 am until the time of Funeral Mass at 12:00 noon. Mary was born in Flint on December 4, 1934, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley and Marion (Vorpagel) Allard. Mary would marry the love of her life, Roger VanAlst, on April 18, 1953, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Together their union would be blessed with seven children. Sadly, he preceded her in death on January 8, 1991. Educated locally, Mary graduated from St. Mary Catholic School with the Class of 1952. She continued her education, earning her degree as a Registered Nurse from Mott Community College, graduating in 1982. Mary was a Registered Nurse for McLaren Hospital until her retirement in 1996. After retirement, she volunteered at the Genesee County Free Clinic as well as the American Red Cross. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends -especially with her grandchildren. She loved going to her grandchildren’s sporting events and church.
Left to cherish her memory; six children: L. Eugene "Gene" and wife, Charlene VanAlst, Paul VanAlst, Mark and wife, Teresa VanAlst, Dean VanAlst, Scott and wife, Dana VanAlst; Frederica and husband, Joe Cotherman; her brother, Stanley, and wife, Faye; 15 grandchildren: Nick, Tracy, Mike, Devon and wife, Lindsey, Heidi and husband, Derek, Zach and wife, Tori, Hannah, Danielle, Briana, Kassandra, Kalsey and husband, Jimmy, Kara, Megan, Carlie, and Jolene; 12 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Dennis VanAlst; and many other family members and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents: Stanley and Marion Allard; husband, Roger; daughter, Michel, three sisters: Elizabeth, Phyllis, and Virginia; brother: Tommy; mother-in-law, Freda; and brother-in-law, Gary.
