Obituary of David Eugene Shurter
Age 71, of Flushing, died on Friday, December 6, 2019, at Birchwood Assisted Living in Flushing. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am, Thursday, December 12, 2019, at Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services in Mt. Morris, with burial at Great Lakes National Cemetery at 1:30 pm, with graveside Military Honors. Dave’s family will receive friends at Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services on Wednesday, from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Thursday, from 10:00 am until the time of the service at 11:00 am. Memorial donations may be directed to Abilities First Charitable Organization of Michigan. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Dave was born on September 6, 1948, in Flint, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edsel and Lorene (Fox) Shurter. Proud to have served his country, Dave enlisted with the United States Marine Corps from 1965 to 1970, serving in Vietnam. Dave was involved with several veteran organizations, including the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), Purple Heart Association, and The Soldiers Relief Commission for 2 terms; 92-94, and 97-99. Dave graduated with a bachelor’s degree in human resource management from Spring Arbor College in1991. On October 5, 1991, Dave married the love of his life, Dawn Rivett, in Flint. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, planting tomatoes, going to the casino, and color touring. Dave is survived by his wife, Dawn; three children: Tony and wife, Kylee Shurter, Kelly and husband, Kevin Cooper, and Shelly Cook; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, Donald and wife, Eunetta Shurter; sister, Muriel and husband, Jerry Smithwick; many nieces; nephews; and special friends: Kindra Wright, Randy Miller, Gloria Neeley, Lori Starr, and the greatest neighbors in the world.
