Contributions to the tribute of Jerald "Jerry" Wade Pillow

Jerry was not only an officer in MM he was a fixture in MM. I remember meeting Jerry when he first started as an officer in MM thru my dad Chuck who had been a fireman in MM since the stone age , I was around 13 at the time and thought "this guys pretty cool for a cop" haha. I got to know Jerry as time went and more so after I became a fireman in MM when I was 18. When I was about twenty one I pulled out of the old car wash just south of St Marys and lit up the night with my Z28 about the time I hit 3rd gear I looked and there was Jerry sitting in the drive at St, Marys ready to crack down on the hot rods that hung out at the car wash in the evenings. He knew it was me and ran me down with the siren and lights blasting. When he pulled my over he came to the car and said "#$$@ it Baldwin you cant do that right in front of me you know I have to pull you over now just sit here for a while and I'll pretend to write you a ticket" as he knew all the other 10 or more cars parked at the old wash were watching. Anyway that was my favorite Jerry Pillow moment as a youngster. Jerry was a great guy and I can still picture him cruising around town in his squad car. He will be missed but not forgotten, a true legend in MM.

We both enjoyed Jerry humor. He would always stick to tongue out and make a funny face as we danced by him. I appreciated his guitar playing and singing. He was a friend to us.

Jerry Pillow was one of a very small group of Mt Morris folks that kept me from self destructing in the late 1970s as a teenage wild boy. Although not clear to me at the time, his efforts kept me from losing many great opportunities that eventually came my way. My Naval Officer Career and 2nd career as a high school teacher could not have been possible without his choice decisions. I was too wild and he could have thrown the book at me - real easy - he chose to scold rather than arrest. God Rest Your Soul - Mr Pillow. I have tried to model my use of authority in the Navy and in a high school - just as you did with the basis of using authority to change behavior and build a better person rather than punish and show off power.
