John and I served as plankowners in M division on the USS Monongahela, from 1981-84 ish. We had some great times together in Norfolk, Rota, Palma, Florida, LA....John liked playing spades, popping wheelies on a 10 speed bike, and bragging about his native state of Michigan. I have a few stories and pictures of our Navy times if anyone is interested....

John served in the Navy with me onboard USS DULUTH LPD 6 as my forward machinery space Leading Chief. He was one of the finest Chief Petty Officers I had to the privilege to serve with during my 28 year Naval career. He was "THAT CHIEF" who always took care of his equipment, was the first to take on any tasks but most importantly he took care of his Sailors no matter what was going on in their lives. He made sure to include their families as part of the family onboard the ship. I was so happy to see John retired and working in the Ingalls Shipyard years ago and catch up with him each and every time he was down here or onboard any of our LPD 17 class ships working his magic on our ships for his company. To all of John's Children, grandchildren, parents and siblings please know what a terrific person your dad, grandpa, brother, son, uncle was. He was a truly great friend and I will miss him and his smile and jokes! John you will be greatly missed by so many of us down here in Mississippi. To the Pender Family may God bless and hold you all close and give you comfort during this time of loss. You are all in my prayers. Sincerely and with deepest condolences. Janet Mahn

John, and I were Old shipmates, he was my CPO Sponsor When I made Chief in 96, John was Truly and Friend, and we remained in contact thru the years, John, being a Big Michigan Fan and Me being a Big Ohio State Fan, we Texted from time to time and spoke about the Games.
