Dear Family,
First I'd like to apologize for the delay in sending this condolence. Kelly gave Patrick and me the sad news the day Uncle Tom passed. I guess I've just been absorbing the weight, thinking about him daily, as he was the last of that generation of Martins, the last tie to my Dad and Grandma and Grandpa. It is very unsettling and sad.
I am so sorry for your loss and his passing. Uncle Tom was always very, very good to me. It wasn't easy for me as a kid growing up away from the family and I always felt like an outsider. Uncle Tom always made a fuss over me and pulled me into the group. He was also the only one who ever asked about my Mom or said that he liked her, which helped me feel accepted as a kid, because it was clear he was the only one who held any fondness. I always kind of felt like a black sheep when he wasn't around in family gathering. Unfortunately I didn't know him well as an adult due to the miles between us, but I always thought he was a class act and sincerely a warm, people person. I was also very appreciative that he did not pass judgement on my tattered relationship with my Dad, or add to my grief and guilt when Dad died. In fact, I would not have even known my Dad was sick if he hadn't reached out and told my Mom. Because he did, I was able to mend a few fences before Dad died. For this alone, I am eternally grateful.
Uncle Tom was also Mom's favorite of the "boys" and she had tremendous respect and affection for him like her little brother. She used to tell the story of the two of them sitting up late in her kitchen the night he came to say he was enlisting, to hopefully take the spot of some young family man. Mom said he was so genuine, idealistic and earnest in his desire to serve. Mom said she tried to talk him out of it, to no avail. She said she was both so proud of his integrity and terrified for him. Mom said he was so beat up when he came home, and she was proud and sad for all he'd experienced.
In my mind, Uncle Tom was our patriarch and the glue that held the family together. We have lost a great family man and he will be missed by all.

Darnell, Adam and Jennifer, Andrea and Frank: Debbie and I are very saddened by Tom's death. I'll remember Tom as one who was always a student of his profession. He had a passion for bringing together the sacredness of the funeral and a families need to share their loved ones story. Tom made people feel important and that they were one of his friends. Mr. Martin came to my Sociology class and spoke in 1979. He talked about serving his country and the impact Vietnam had on him as well as being a funeral director. He was very fascinating and left a lasting impression on my life. May God bless you all and Tom for touching my life.

To the Martin Family, Tom and I have been talking on Facebook, just a touch the last couple of months and talking about lunch, at a place in Davison that was easy for him to get in and out of, but did not make it.
