Obituary of Calvin E. Berry

Of Genesee, age 86, died Friday, July 15, 2011 at Genesys Regional Medical Center. The funeral service will take place 11:00am, Monday, July 18, 2011 at the Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris. Pastor Roger Gedcke will officiate with burial to follow in Thetford Township Cemetery. Calvin's family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00pm to 7:00pm. Those desiring may direct memorial contributions to Genesee United Methodist Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Calvin was born September 27, 1924 in Detroit, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl and Leone (Huggler) Berry. He and Lucille Thompson were united in marriage July 12, 1947 in Detroit. Calvin proudly served in The United States Navy during WWII. He spent 3 years in the South Pacific before receiving his Honorable Discharge February 2, 1946. Calvin was a Police Officer for the City of Detroit for 25 years before retiring in 1972. He was a member of D.P.O.A Detroit Police Officers Association, Patrol Craft Sailors and the Treasurer of the mens group at Genesee United Methodist Church. Calvin enjoyed spending time with family and friends, collecting American Indian artifacts, taking his hobby of history to local schools, looking for arrowheads, lending a helping hand to those in need, gardening and helping out in the food pantry at his church. Calvin leaves to cherish his memory, wife Lucille, two sons; Michael and wife Diane Berry, James and wife Helen Berry, granddaughter, Laura and husband, Dr. Geert Craenen, sister, Beverly and husband John Stevenson, sister-in-law, Nina Thompson, aunt, Marjoria and husband, Andrew Huggler and many nieces, nephews and friends. Calvin was preceded in death by his parents.
