age 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Maple Woods Manor of Clio, her residence for the past four years.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 am, Monday, March 12, 2012, with viewing one hour prior at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 5199 Richfield Rd. Father George V. Puthenpeedika officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday 2-8pm with a Scripture Service by Father Phil Schmitter at 7pm, at Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services 1194 E. Mt. Morris Rd., Mt. Morris.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Rosary School or to the St. Frances Prayer Center. Envelopes are available at the funeral home and church.
Velma was born April 5, 1917 in Saskatchewan, Canada, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Era (Sowle) Thrower. She was united in marriage to Edward J. Fisher May 29, 1937 at All Saints Catholic Church. Prior to Ed's death in 2002, they were married 65 years and resided in Flint most of their lives. Velma assisted as bookkeeper/dispatcher in the family business, Fisher Brothers Sand & Gravel, until her retirement in 1982. Velma was a founding member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Surviving are her four children: James Fisher, his seven children, 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; Edward "Mick" (Donna), their three children and 10 grandchildren; Patricia Tremain, her two children and nine grandchildren; Andrea Woodwky (Mike), and her two children; sisters, Rosalie Nord, Lorna Colvin and Prudy Diehl. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Angeline Bauman and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Julia Helen McConnell and Mary Heron and daughter-in-law, Patricia Fisher.
Our family wishes to thank Rachel Gomez, Gloria Gomez and Sylvia Vilas for their wonderful in-home care. We also wish to extend our sincere gratitude to the outstanding staff of Maple Woods Manor Nursing Home for the loving kindness and professional care shown to our mother. Velma was truly blessed with the best!
