I've had a few requests to share the tribute/toast I gave for Bob last night. Looks like I can't fit it all in one box here, so, here is Part 2
-Sarah Schulz, Bob's Daughter-in-law
He had big plans to spend this coming summer finishing the cabin with us. We will finish it -- probably a little slower and with a little less precision - and it will be a standing joyful active memorial to him and his great willingness to help those he loved.
Bob loved maps and he loved figuring his way around, especially in the NYC Subway system. Even when it was excessively easier and sometimes even cheaper to take a cab, he would study his pocket-creased paper map of subway and bus routes to determine the course then strongly insist that we take it and strongly argue that his way was best even though we were the ones who lived there. We would all get annoyed - assuming that his motives were all about saving money compared to the extravagance of a cab. In truth, I think that wasn't it at allI think he just loved the challenge of solving a problem and the satisfaction of not taking the easy way.
So, I know his Energy is imprinted with the idea that his life is now our map, showing us how to set goals and accomplish them, explore the world around us, live a good honest life, and, yes.be frugal of wallet but generous in every way that matters.
Bob was a man of virtue taken to extremes. He followed the rules. He was honest and helpful and loyal and trustworthy - all of these sometimes so strongly that it could make us crazy. He would not speed even when he was slowing traffic. He would agree to help others, even if it took him away from priorities at home. He would follow through on his promises without fail even at great personal inconvenience. He would return a few pennies of over payment to a cashier even as the check-out line got longer and longer.
That was just Bob. We loved him because of and in spite of all of these things, and I know they are indelibly imprinted on his Energy.
So, I think the Energy that powered his body is now set free in the universe, and imprinted with the essence of him - who he was and the lessons he taught us and all of our memories of him. I think that Energy can and will never be destroyed. It will exist forever in the universe and wait for all of us to release our Energy one day and join it. If heaven is real, I think that must be what it is.
One last thing that Bob was known for and is definitely now part of his Energy was his readiness after a long hard day to take a break, relax and enjoy the company of good friends. He loved to talk, joke, reminisce, and share stories and favorite pieces of trivia with those he loved. Bob would always make sure everyone who wanted one had a cold beer in hand for these simple yet wonderful times. Well we've just had some of the hardest days we can imagine and there's nothing more appropriate that I can think of to do now than to follow his lead and enjoy a cold beer together in his honor while we share the stories and memories of him.

I've had a few requests to share the tribute/toast I gave for Bob last night. Looks like I can't fit it all in one box here, so, here is Part 1 (Sarah Schulz, Bob's Daughter-in-law)
Bob spoke at Barb's mother's memorial service. I don't remember exactly what he said, but I remember being struck by how deeply he felt about her. Here was a woman who wasn't technically related to himwho had the infamous title "mother-in-law", but who had touched him very deeply. Back then I recall recognizing the fact that he had known her since he was practically a kid (Bob and Barb got married when he was 21). His growth into adulthood and parenthood was influenced by her. So, she wasn't a storybook evil in-lawon the contrary, she was a mentor, a teacher, a parenting coach, a cherished friend, someone whom he loved and who loved him. He was so moved by her and her presence in his life that he spoke with a fervor that I had never seen in him as he memorialized her.
The night Bob died I thought about those moments back then at Alice's memorial service and realized that's exactly how I feel about him. I met him when I was practically a kid. I had the great fortune of growing into adulthood and parenthood influenced by him. He was not a storybook "evil" in-law but a mentor, a teacher, a coach, a cherished friend, someone who I loved and who loved me. I will be forever grateful to have had that kind of relationship with him.
I don't know what happens when we die, but if heaven is real, I am sure there is no one more welcome there than Bob. I imagine him surrounded with the iconic fluffy clouds and warm light and harps. He's wearing a t-shirt with a nerdy joke on it, jeans, his tool belt, steel toed boots and fishing hat. He has that giant impish smile on his face .. the one that lit up to the crinkles around his eyes. He's warm and content and happy.
I don't know what happens when we die, but I have heard of the scientific assertion that Energy can be neither created nor destroyed. So I think that the energy that powered Bob's body for 67 years must still exist around us. And I think imprinted somehow on this energy are memories and the essence of who he was and what he taught us.
Bob loved "big words", and I am a bit annoyed because I came across a good one a few weeks back and didn't get to share it with him. Pedant.it means a person who is "excessively concerned with minor details and rules or with displaying academic learning". I was so looking forward to using that word with himteasing him about how precisely it described him.of course, he would have already known this word, but he would have appreciated me for finding it and bringing it to him. Bob loved a good tease, and the best tease also combined a respectable display of linguistic ability.
So, I know that his Energy is imprinted with memories and lessons about laughing at ourselves, and being a life-long learner.
Bob and Andy and my dad spent last summer building our cabin on Wixom Lake. He would stay at our house for weeks at a time. They would wake up early to study the plans and make Home Depot shopping lists. They would spend 12 hour days building, planning, discussing every angle and 16th of an inch, and then come back to our house at night to have some beers, reminisce about the day they had and formulate plans to do it all over again in the morning. One of those evenings, I asked Bob if he was enjoying this summer of hard work - I was a little worried that his strong sense of obligation was his main motivation. "What do you mean?," he said, "I am spending all day with my son outside in this beautiful summer. I am building a house at age 66. I've never felt so alive".
So, I know his energy is imprinted with memories and lessons of love for family, helping others and having pride in a good hard day's work.
