Of Houghton Lake, formerly of Flint, age 85, died Saturday, January 26, 2013, at Kings Nursing Home. The funeral service will take place 1:00 pm, Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at the Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services in Mt. Morris. Pastor David Burkett will officiate with burial to follow in Flint Memorial Park. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 11:00 am until time of service at 1:00 pm. Those desiring may consider memorial contributions to American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Cal was born August 11, 1927, in Shawmut, Alabama the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley and Fanny (Jones) Smith. He married Mary C. Westfall on December 11, 1971.
Cal proudly served his country during World War II, on the USS Gunson. While serving his country, he became a member of the Sacred Order of the Golden Dragon. Cal retired in 1984 from General Motors and was a member of the UAW.
Left to cherish his memory are, wife, Mary; stepson, David Wakefield; grandchildren, Terri and Homer Hellier, Kim Wakefield, Tina and Brian Wheelock, Gale and Paul Ribenhouer, Don and Bridgett Wakefield, and Kylea and Ryan Smiith; great-grandchildren, Alex, Mackenzie, Nicholas, Owen, Houston, Vanessa, Jillian Peyton, Savanna, Sebastion, Lance, Troy and Ayden;
great-great grandchildren, Travis, Trista, Michelle, Lindsey, Brent, Scott, Zeth, Eric, Brandy, Nick, Casey, Nathan, Jackie and Derrick; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Phyllis Smith; and niece, Brenda Foster.
Cal was preceded in death by his parents; step-son, Wayne Wakefield; grandson, Travis Wakefield; and brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Tootsie Smith.
