No matter how much pain Jeremy was in, it was his smile that brightened my day while he was at Karmanos. As his Nursing Assistant, I had the privilege to assist in Jeremy's care and he became a friend who was so dear & close to my heart. We had long conversations about Elijah, his Mom, Laurie, & his new phone & his music. I shed a tear as I pass each room he was in at the hospital. My heart goes out to his family, but know how much he loved & cherished you. He will forever hold a special place in my heart for being a warrior for as long as he could. I will miss him, but have the fondest of memories of him doing what he could to get well to return home to his son. Elijah, you are so loved ! May God bless you all & hold you in his arms to help heal you & lift you up. I wish I could have been at his service, but I am at the hospital on duty. I don't believe an accident of birth makes people brothers. It makes them siblings and gives them the same parents. Brotherhood is a condition people have to work at. A friend is a brother who was once a bother. A brother shares childhood memories and grown-up dreams. Our brothers are there with us from the beginning of our personal existence to the inevitable end. I'm sure it was amazing growing up with someone like Jeremy - someone to lean on, someone to count on... someone to tell on! A sibling may be the keeper of one's identity and the only person with the keys to one's unrestrained, more essential self. Our brother's push buttons that put us in roles we felt sure we had let go of long ago - the baby, the peacekeeper, the caretaker, the avoider.... It doesn't seem to matter how much time has elapsed or how far you've traveled. Every memory will be tough, Kevin, but just try and laugh and remember all the times Jer-Bear made you laugh or shake your head in disbelief. "I sought my soul, but my soul I could not see.
