I met Denny a couple of years back reffing a basketball scrimmage at Birch Run. He quickly became a role model and a great inspiration to me as I have pursued becoming both a teacher and an official at a young age. Denny was always someone I looked up to, and could go to with questions. He was always a pleasure to work with, and someone I looked forward to seeing on my schedule, as I always knew it would be a fun time. He will truly be missed, and it is with a deeply saddened heart I heard of his passing.

I was so sad to hear today of Denny's passing. He was a great principal with a no nonsense way and wonderful sense of humor. He gave me a chance to come in and teach in spite of some nasty false rumors that were going around, saying "I don't listen to that nonsense. I judge for myself and you are a great teacher." That meant the world to me! He also gave me a certificate in honor of "being the first to break the new copier"! :)
He was a true educator who loved the kids and would do anything for the good of the school...a truly great man!
My prayers are offered for Denny and his family.
Requiescat in pace, friend.

Mr Winchester was the first teacher to make me realize the difference between learning and memorizing. As a freshman in his World History class I got a sense of just how interesting and interactive a classroom could be. What a gift it was to have him as a teacher. As an editorial cartoonist, I hope that I present some of that same playful curiosity about history and human behavior that I experienced in Mr. Winchester's classes.

I'm so sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Winch. He was a great teacher, and an even better person. I remember his history classes fondly, and really enjoyed following him around on the Europe trip picking up interesting tidbits. He kept things interesting, just by being himself.
While I will always remember him as my favorite history teacher ever, one of my favorite moments with him was in a basketball game he reffed. I was an assistant coach on one of the teams playing at the time, and was getting on him about a couple of calls against my team, half jokingly. He looked at me, and said "If you keep complaining, I'm not only going to give you a technical here, but I also will be taking a closer look at your homework this weekend." We both got a real good laugh out of it.
He was a great guy, and one of the best teachers I have ever had. I'm truly sorry to hear about his passing.

I often tell people that Dennis got me fired from a job. When I was in his class as a high school student he taught us about the stuff the history text books did not tell us. He taught us all the stuff that really happened but American historians did not want us to know. He taught me to ask more difficult questions and push and challenge the status quo. Thus I have always done that including in working places and it got me fired once.
I had a natural love of history and he gave it life that still lives today. His classes were always fun but we learned so much too.
And how could I not mention some of the one liners like, "warm bucket of spit," and "oral diahrea" :)

Denny, (aka Mr. Winch) made a profound impact on my life from the time I first stepped into his classroom at Powers. I wasn't a fan of History, but Denny had a unique way to engage his students, making something so boring and dull, into a class that I very much looked forward to going to solely because of him. I was thrilled to hear he was going to be the new principal at St. Mary's! I had nephews who attended there and what better excuse for me to drop in and say hello! Over the years, I looked forward to attending school functions, for St. Mary's, mostly, to just say hi and to catch up on how things were going with him as a principal and I guess to check up on my nephews. Denny never disappointed and always had a good story to tell. I am so proud to be able to say that he was more than just my teacher but also became a good friend. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Denny. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family during this very difficult time. God Bless.

Mr. Winchester was a wonderful teacher and I will never forget my experiences as his student at Powers. Grant eternal rest unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

The impact that you made on my sister and myself is one that will last forever. From great lectures to fun nicknames you made history our favorite subject. You are one of our leading inspirations that set us on the path to be history teachers ourselves. We only hope that we can be half the teacher you were, and leave lasting impacts on our students like the one you left for us.
